LOT FROM THE ORGANIC COFFEE COOPERATIVE
The COMSA cooperative – Cafe Organico Marcala Sociedad Anonimo – is a leader in organic coffee production in Central America. One of the largest and finest cooperatives, it works with 1,200 farmers. COMSA trains in organic farming practices and responsible, sustainable production.
The cooperative was founded in the Marcala community in central Honduras. At the beginning, in 2001, it partnered with just 69 members, and in nearly 25 years it has grown 17 times! From the start, COMSA aimed to invest in organic methods, as opposed to conventional production.
Today, COMSA continues to innovate and experiment with organic processes to extend the coffee tree’s lifecycle and deliver excellent coffee. The terroir is remarkable: with altitudes of 1,200–1,700 meters above sea level, farmers can harvest a wide range of unique cherries. Several lots from the cooperative have already won the Cup of Excellence competition.
This Marcala coffee is produced under strict organic standards introduced by organic farmer Oscar Alonso, with a strong focus on restoring ecological balance and revitalizing soils. Farmers encourage diversification and biodiversity preservation on their farms. One of the practices is shade-growing, mainly with inga trees, as well as citrus and Musa (banana) plants. That’s why this Honduran lot is truly special — coffee with a spirit of purpose.
